Precision refers to the consistency of repeated measurements. Accuracy refers to how close a measurement is to the true value.
Common Engineering Tolerances
- Standard machining: ±0.005" (±0.127 mm)
- Precision machining: ±0.001" (±0.025 mm)
- Grinding: ±0.0005" (±0.013 mm)
Measurement Instruments
- Caliper: 0.001" or 0.01 mm resolution
- Micrometer: 0.0001" or 0.001 mm resolution
- CMM: 0.0001" or better
