Precision & Accuracy

Precision refers to the consistency of repeated measurements. Accuracy refers to how close a measurement is to the true value.

Common Engineering Tolerances

  • Standard machining: ±0.005" (±0.127 mm)
  • Precision machining: ±0.001" (±0.025 mm)
  • Grinding: ±0.0005" (±0.013 mm)

Measurement Instruments

  • Caliper: 0.001" or 0.01 mm resolution
  • Micrometer: 0.0001" or 0.001 mm resolution
  • CMM: 0.0001" or better
